MADRID — Spanish football has been plunged into mourning following the tragic death of CD Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel, who succumbed to injuries sustained during a catastrophic on-pitch collision during a Segunda División fixture on Monday. The second-tier match against FC Andorra was abandoned in its final moments as medical personnel rushed to attend to the motionless forward on the pitch.
The fatal incident occurred deep into injury time as de Miguel chased a ball near the halfway line. Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono rushed far outside his penalty area to clear the ball, colliding at high speed with the advancing striker. The force of the impact left de Miguel clutching his chest before he collapsed motionless onto the turf, deeply shocking players and staff from both clubs.
Owono was immediately issued a straight red card by the referee for the challenge. However, upon realizing the gravity of de Miguel’s physical state, the goalkeeper aborted his exit and sprinted back to assist in attending to his opponent on the pitch.
Emergency medical technicians provided immediate on-field stabilization attempts as distraught players looked on, prompting match officials to call off the remaining minutes of the encounter. Despite the rapid intervention of medical teams, CD Tenerife subsequently confirmed the tragic passing of their forward, triggering a wave of tributes and condolences across Spanish and European football institutions.
