The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) said coastal areas in Umm Al Quwain had been temporarily closed while specialist teams assess the spill, evaluate its environmental impact and determine the safety measures required before public access can resume.
The ministry said the reported odours posed no health risk to residents. It added that response teams began containment, site cordoning, cleanup and remediation operations immediately after the spill was detected, with the aim of limiting damage to the marine environment.
The response is being carried out in coordination with local and federal authorities, while precautionary coastal surveys and monitoring activities continue.
Coastal closures remain in place
All beaches and coastal areas in Umm Al Quwain have been temporarily closed until the assessments are completed and the necessary public safety and marine protection measures are identified, according to MOCCAE.
The restrictions are intended to give response teams time to examine the affected coastline, assess environmental conditions and determine whether additional intervention is needed.
The ministry said ongoing surveys would help establish the extent of the impact and guide measures to protect the marine environment. However, it did not disclose the quantity of oil released, the identity of the tanker or the precise location where the spill originated.
No reopening date was announced for the affected beaches. Access restrictions will therefore remain subject to further instructions from the relevant authorities.
Cleanup operations target environmental impact
Following the discovery of the spill, teams launched measures to contain the oil, secure affected locations and carry out cleanup and remediation work.
Coordination between federal and local authorities is intended to support the response and ensure that environmental assessments inform subsequent action. Monitoring is also continuing along the coast to evaluate the effects of the incident and identify any further measures required.
Oil contamination can threaten coastal habitats and marine life, depending on the volume released, local conditions and the effectiveness of containment efforts. The extent of any environmental damage from this incident has not yet been detailed in the ministry’s announcement.
Authorities have not provided information confirming whether marine wildlife has been affected or how long cleanup operations are expected to continue.
Fishermen and sea users urged to follow guidance
MOCCAE has urged fishermen and other sea users to comply with official instructions and avoid fishing in affected areas while assessments and response activities remain underway.
The ministry also called on residents to obtain information through official channels, refrain from spreading rumours and follow updates on the incident and the measures being implemented.
The advice is intended to help protect public safety and prevent activity in areas where environmental conditions are still being assessed.
Further assessments to determine next steps
The confirmed spill has prompted a coordinated coastal response as authorities work to limit environmental effects and establish the conditions needed for safe access.
The ministry’s continuing surveys and monitoring will help determine the extent of contamination and whether further cleanup or marine protection measures are necessary. Details concerning the tanker, the volume of oil involved and the expected duration of the closures have not been released.
Residents, fishermen and visitors are advised to respect the temporary restrictions and wait for official announcements before returning to affected coastal areas.
