Kazakhstan — Iran’s freestyle wrestling team recorded three victories in the 61kg, 70kg and 125kg categories at the ongoing World Wrestling Championships in Kazakhstan, with Amirhossein Zare, Ahmad Mohammadnejad and Sina Khalili advancing to the next stages of their respective competitions.
According to Iran’s IRNA news agency, all three wrestlers won their latest bouts after receiving byes in the opening round. Their results strengthened Iran’s presence across the three weight divisions as the tournament progressed.
In the 125kg category, Amirhossein Zare produced a commanding performance against India’s Jaspuran Singh. After sitting out the first round, the Iranian heavyweight entered the competition in the second round and secured an 11-0 victory.
The result earned Zare a place in the quarter-finals, keeping his campaign on course for a potential medal challenge. His dominant scoreline also demonstrated his control of the bout against the Indian opponent.
Iran also secured a victory in the 61kg division through young wrestler Ahmad Mohammadnejad. Competing after a first-round bye, Mohammadnejad faced India’s Nikhil in his next contest and emerged victorious with a narrow 10-9 result.
The closely fought encounter required Mohammadnejad to maintain his advantage against a determined opponent. The one-point margin reflected the competitive nature of the bout, with the Iranian ultimately doing enough to secure progression to the next round.
Mohammadnejad’s section of the draw also includes Norouzav, a world bronze medallist, adding further competition as the lightweight category moves forward. The presence of an established international medal winner makes the progression through this group an important challenge for the Iranian wrestler.
Sina Khalili completed Iran’s successful run for the day in the 70kg division. Following a bye in the opening round, he faced Uzbekistan’s Yarshov and delivered a decisive 8-0 victory.
Khalili’s performance secured his advancement in the competition without allowing his opponent to register points. His next contests will take place in a group that includes Mongolia’s Tomur Üchır, a world silver medallist.
The three results gave Iran victories in separate weight categories, with each wrestler taking a different route to success. Zare advanced through a high-scoring win in the heavyweight division, Mohammadnejad survived a closely contested match at 61kg, while Khalili recorded a shutout victory in the 70kg category.
The tournament now presents further challenges for the Iranian representatives as they seek to progress through the elimination rounds. Their next opponents and performances will determine how far they advance in the respective divisions.
For Iran, the three wins provide positive momentum across its freestyle wrestling campaign. Zare has reached the quarter-finals, while Mohammadnejad and Khalili have also moved forward after overcoming their latest opponents.
