Abu Dhabi — The United Arab Emirates has honoured members of the Flydubai crew involved in a dramatic mid-air emergency in September, recognising their actions in securing the aircraft and protecting passengers during the incident.
The recognition follows an emergency involving Flydubai flight FZ1073, which was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv on September 30 when an altercation in the cockpit forced the aircraft to divert to Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia.
UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan awarded the First Class Order of Zayed II to the crew members involved. Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum presented the honours during a ceremony on October 27, praising their professionalism and commitment to passenger safety. The incident attracted international attention after the aircraft experienced a serious security emergency while in flight. According to Flydubai, an altercation occurred in the cockpit, leaving both the captain and co-pilot injured.
The airline confirmed that other Flydubai pilots who were travelling aboard the aircraft as off-duty crew members intervened and helped secure the cockpit. They subsequently took control of the aircraft and diverted it safely to Tabuk.
All 172 passengers and crew members survived the incident. The injured pilots received medical attention in Saudi Arabia, while passengers were provided assistance at the airport before continuing their journey on a replacement aircraft.
The captain was identified in subsequent media reports as Indian pilot Smit Machchhar. Despite suffering injuries, he reportedly managed to unlock the cockpit door, allowing others to intervene during the emergency. Two additional Flydubai pilots travelling on the flight then helped stabilise the aircraft and complete the emergency landing.
Recognition for the flight crew
The UAE leadership praised the crew members for their courage and responsible conduct under exceptionally difficult circumstances. The award ceremony recognised their contribution to ensuring the safety of everyone aboard the aircraft.
Kenyan media also identified two cabin crew members, David Kimotho and John Muchina, among those recognised for their actions during the September incident.
Questions surrounding the pilots’ identities
The identities of the two additional pilots who took control of the aircraft attracted considerable public interest following the emergency landing. Initial reports did not disclose their names, and the airline called for restraint while the official investigation established the circumstances.
The UAE’s public announcement of the honours did not provide a complete list of recipients or identify the two pilots who secured the aircraft. Consequently, their names cannot be independently confirmed from the official information currently available. The award announcement should not be treated as confirmation that their identities have been publicly disclosed.
Flydubai has stated that it is cooperating with the relevant authorities in the investigation. The airline also temporarily suspended flights to and from Israel following the incident.
The recognition highlights the importance of coordinated action among flight crews during aviation emergencies, particularly when unexpected events threaten the safety of passengers and aircraft operations.
