Manama — Saudi Arabia has called for stronger regional cooperation, diplomatic engagement and measures to prevent further escalation across the Middle East, as Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Waleed Elkhereiji addressed the 22nd Manama Dialogue in Bahrain.
Speaking during a session examining the consequences of major regional conflicts, Elkhereiji stressed the importance of containing ongoing crises and strengthening security and stability at a time of growing regional uncertainty.
He highlighted the expansion of conflict zones, increasing humanitarian suffering and mounting threats to maritime security, energy supplies and the global economy. He said protecting countries and addressing the underlying causes of disputes were essential to preventing further escalation and avoiding repeated cycles of conflict.
Saudi Arabia outlines its regional security approach
Elkhereiji explained that Saudi Arabia considers its national security closely connected to the stability of the wider region. He emphasised that lasting peace provides the foundation for sustainable development, economic growth and prosperity.
He said the Kingdom combines efforts to strengthen its defensive capabilities and protect national sovereignty in accordance with international law with diplomatic initiatives based on respect for sovereignty, good neighbourly relations and non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries.
The vice minister also reaffirmed Riyadh’s commitment to coordinating with regional and international partners to reduce tensions and pursue peaceful solutions to disputes.
Yemen remains a key regional concern
Addressing the situation in Yemen, Elkhereiji reiterated Saudi Arabia’s support for the country’s legitimate government and efforts to achieve a comprehensive political settlement that preserves Yemen’s unity, security and stability.
He condemned what he described as continued escalation by the Houthi militias against Yemen and Saudi Arabia. He specifically referred to attacks on civilian infrastructure, threats to maritime security and actions that undermine diplomatic initiatives intended to resolve the conflict.
He also warned against attempts to expand hostilities across the region, stressing the importance of protecting civilian facilities and maintaining security along vital maritime routes.
The remarks reflected Saudi Arabia’s position that a political settlement remains necessary to address Yemen’s prolonged conflict and prevent further regional instability.
Strengthening national resilience and defence capabilities
Elkhereiji said the challenges facing the region demonstrate the importance of improving the ability of individual states to withstand security threats and disruptions.
He outlined several areas in which Saudi Arabia is developing its national resilience, including expanding defence capabilities, protecting critical infrastructure, improving cybersecurity and ensuring the continuity of essential public services.
He also highlighted the importance of stronger coordination among Gulf countries and the development of wider defence partnerships with international partners.
These measures, he indicated, form part of a broader approach to protecting national interests while maintaining regional security and economic stability.
Saudi Arabia advocates a cooperative regional security framework
Concluding his address, Elkhereiji emphasised the need for a regional security structure built around stable states, international cooperation and political settlements that address the legitimate interests of affected populations.
He said Saudi Arabia would continue working with regional and international partners to promote diplomatic solutions and prevent conflicts from spreading.
The vice minister stressed that the people of the region should be able to pursue security, development and prosperity without the recurring disruption caused by armed conflict.
The 22nd Manama Dialogue provides a platform for policymakers, diplomats and security officials to discuss regional and international challenges, including defence cooperation, geopolitical tensions and the future of Middle Eastern security arrangements.
