Arsenal secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Slavia Prague in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, November 4, with goals from Noni Madueke and Viktor Gyokeres giving Mikel Arteta’s side an important away win despite a late fightback from the Czech hosts.
The result at the Fortuna Arena extended Arsenal’s unbeaten start in the Champions League campaign and moved the Premier League side up to third in the league-phase standings. However, what initially appeared to be a comfortable evening became a tense contest after Slavia increased their attacking intensity following the interval.
Arsenal made an immediate impact, taking the lead in the ninth minute. Gyokeres produced an excellent pass to release Madueke, who broke into the penalty area before finishing past goalkeeper Nazar Domchak.
The visitors continued creating opportunities and doubled their advantage in the 38th minute. After winning possession high up the pitch, Mikel Merino supplied Gyokeres, who produced a composed curling finish into the far corner to make it 2-0.
Despite their first-half dominance, Arsenal failed to extend the advantage before the break, leaving the hosts with an opportunity to recover.
Slavia Prague returned with greater attacking purpose and put the visitors under considerable pressure. Goalkeeper David Raya became increasingly important, producing several crucial interventions to preserve Arsenal’s advantage.
Gabriel Magalhaes also played a decisive defensive role, clearing a dangerous effort off the goal line in the 75th minute. Raya subsequently made another outstanding save to push an Oskar Kubiak header against the post.
Slavia eventually found a breakthrough in the 90th minute when Wiktor Nowak converted from close range following David Jurasek’s delivery, setting up a dramatic finish.
Arsenal managed to withstand the remaining pressure and secure all three points. The victory marked their third win in four Champions League matches.
Gyokeres was particularly influential, contributing both a goal and an assist as he continued to improve his performances following a difficult start to the season. Arteta, however, acknowledged that his team’s second-half display fell below expectations.
