HONG KONG — Second seed Alexandra Eala demonstrated high-level adaptability at the 2026 Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open, shrugging off a last-minute opponent substitution to defeat Australian lucky loser Emerson Jones 6–4, 6–3 in Tuesday’s Round of 32 clash.
The 21-year-old Filipina star—who reached a career-high ranking of World No. 17 this week—was originally scheduled to open her WTA 250 hard-court campaign against American Alycia Parks. However, a late shoulder injury forced Parks to withdraw just hours before the match, thrusting the 18-year-old Jones into the main draw. Despite having to adjust her game plan on short notice, Eala maintained her composure inside Victoria Park Tennis Centre, wrapping up the victory in 83 minutes.
Eala broke early momentum in the second set after a 1–1 deadlock, winning four consecutive games to build a decisive 5–1 advantage. Fuelled by strong vocal support from the local Filipino community, Eala closed out the match cleanly to secure her spot in the Round of 16. Addressing the sudden schedule disruption post-match, Eala admitted she was unaccustomed to such late opponent changes, noting that adapting to unpredictable circumstances remains an essential demand of the professional tour.
The victory keeps Eala on track for a deep run in her final tournament of the season. She will next face 19-year-old Czech player Tereza Valentova on Thursday for a place in the quarterfinals.
