Commercial shops and shopping malls across Egypt have begun operating under revised winter schedules, with the new opening and closing hours taking effect alongside the country’s return to winter time.
Under the updated regulations, most shops and malls are permitted to open at 7:00 am and must close by 10:00 pm on regular weekdays. The schedule forms part of the seasonal adjustments governing commercial and public-facing business activities across the country.
Businesses will be allowed to remain open for an additional hour on Thursdays and Fridays, moving the permitted closing time to 11:00 pm. The extended schedule also applies during official public holidays and designated festive occasions, giving customers more time to shop and access commercial services.
The revised timings are intended to establish a consistent operating framework for retail businesses, shopping centres and other commercial establishments during the winter season. Authorities have linked the seasonal arrangements to the changing needs of consumers and the operating requirements of businesses.
The implementation coincides with Egypt’s transition to winter time, when clocks are moved back by 60 minutes. This seasonal adjustment also affects the daily schedules of commercial activities, making it necessary for businesses and customers to adapt to the updated operating hours.
The winter timetable is part of broader efforts to regulate commercial and service-sector operations nationwide. By setting standard opening and closing periods, the framework seeks to organise business activity while taking account of public convenience and the different demands of weekdays, weekends and holidays.
Energy conservation is another stated consideration behind the seasonal arrangements. Regulating the hours during which shops and commercial centres operate is intended to support more efficient energy use, particularly during periods when lighting, air conditioning and other facilities contribute to electricity consumption.
For consumers, the revised schedule means that most retail outlets and malls will close earlier on ordinary days than on Thursdays, Fridays and official holidays. Shoppers are therefore advised to consider the applicable timetable when planning evening visits.
The updated rules apply to public shops and commercial malls under the winter operating framework. Individual establishments may communicate their specific customer-service arrangements, so visitors should check directly with a business if they need to confirm its exact hours.
With the seasonal schedule now in effect, retailers and customers across Egypt are expected to follow the revised timetable until the next change in operating arrangements.
