Cairo — Egypt and Russia have opportunities to expand their strategic partnership through peaceful nuclear energy cooperation, with energy development and technical expertise emerging as key areas of mutual interest.
Ekaterina Nadolskaya, editor-in-chief of the Russian Federation News Network, highlighted the potential for closer collaboration between the two countries during an interview with journalist Salma Marwan on Cairo News Channel.
Nadolskaya said the Russia-Africa summit provides an important platform for Moscow to strengthen its political and economic engagement with African nations. She identified relations with Egypt, particularly cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear technology, as an area with considerable potential for future development.
She referred to a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi held on the sidelines of the summit. According to Nadolskaya, the two leaders emphasised the importance of advancing peaceful nuclear cooperation and explored its potential contribution to their countries’ shared objectives.
Egypt has been pursuing the development of its energy sector, creating opportunities for international partnerships involving technology, expertise and infrastructure. Russia’s experience in the nuclear industry could support these efforts through technical cooperation and knowledge exchange, Nadolskaya said.
She described Russia as having significant capabilities across the energy sector and argued that closer engagement could deliver benefits for both countries. Such cooperation, she added, could contribute to national development priorities while strengthening their bilateral economic relationship.
One major area of potential collaboration is the peaceful application of nuclear technology. Nuclear energy can provide large-scale electricity generation and support long-term energy planning, although its development requires extensive investment, technical capacity, regulatory oversight and sustained attention to safety.
The comments also placed Egypt-Russia relations within the broader context of Moscow’s engagement with African countries. Nadolskaya said African markets have undergone notable development, creating additional opportunities for Russian businesses and economic partnerships across the continent.
She suggested that stronger commercial and economic links could help Russia expand its presence in African markets. Cooperation could extend beyond energy to include trade and other areas of mutual interest, although she did not identify specific new agreements or projects arising from the summit discussions.
Nadolskaya also linked Russia’s engagement with African countries to the wider international debate over the structure of global political and economic relations. She said Russian President Putin had stressed the importance of a multipolar international system, in which influence and cooperation are distributed among a wider range of countries and regional partners.
For Egypt, cooperation with Russia forms part of its broader international engagement as it seeks to develop infrastructure, strengthen energy capacity and attract technical expertise. For Moscow, partnerships with African countries offer opportunities to deepen trade and expand economic relationships.
The latest comments underline the importance both sides attach to peaceful nuclear cooperation and wider economic engagement. However, the interview did not announce new project commitments, financing arrangements or an implementation timetable.
