Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Iraq, H.E. Mr. Fuad Hussein, met with representatives of the Arab–Portuguese Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Friday, 3 July 2026, in the Portuguese capital, Lisbon, in the presence of a number of Portuguese business leaders and investors, on the sidelines of his official visit to the Portuguese Republic.
During the meeting, which was organized by the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in Lisbon in cooperation with the Arab–Portuguese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, H.E. the Minister affirmed that Iraq attaches great importance to strengthening its economic relations with Portugal and expanding the horizons of cooperation with the private sector, in a manner that contributes to building strategic partnerships that serve the common interests of the two countries.
H.E. the Minister pointed out that Iraq is witnessing an important phase of stability and economic openness and offers promising investment opportunities across various sectors, reviewing the major projects being implemented by the Iraqi Government, particularly in the fields of energy, gas, petrochemical industries, agriculture, housing, renewable energy, religious tourism, as well as new residential city projects, stressing that the Government is working to provide an attractive investment environment and the necessary facilities for investors and foreign companies.
H.E. the Minister affirmed that Iraq represents an important strategic partner for Europe in the fields of energy, trade, and transport, pointing to the importance of diversifying oil export outlets through the development of pipeline projects towards Türkiye, Syria, and Jordan, in a manner that enhances energy security and provides alternative export routes, particularly in light of the current regional developments and the challenges facing maritime navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. H.E. noted that these projects open broad prospects for international companies to contribute to infrastructure and energy projects in Iraq.
H.E. the Minister also invited Portuguese business leaders and investors to visit Iraq and explore the available investment opportunities, stressing the importance of strengthening Portugal’s diplomatic presence in Iraq, given its role in supporting bilateral relations and developing economic, commercial, and investment cooperation between the two countries.
The meeting featured an extensive dialogue with representatives of Portuguese companies on ways to enhance economic cooperation, explore investment opportunities in the Iraqi market, and expand partnerships between the private sectors of the two countries, in a manner that serves their common interests and promotes economic development.
At the conclusion of the meeting, H.E. the Minister expressed his appreciation to the Arab–Portuguese Chamber of Commerce and Industry for organizing the meeting, reaffirming Iraq’s keenness to enhance cooperation with economic institutions and the private sector in Portugal and to translate the shared political will into tangible economic and investment partnerships and projects.
