Two senior military officials of Egypt have succumbed to death following a broad security drive to curb the mining of gold illegally by smugglers in the porous southern borders near Sudan. The deaths highlight the increasing danger being posed to security forces in their effort to curb the unlicensed mining of gold and its subsequent smuggling.
The spokesman of the army says that two people who lost their lives include the head of the border guards of the southern zone and a commander of the battalion’s operations. They met their deaths when they were out in the field carrying out their operations as part of a comprehensive security drive that began in June.
The extensive military sweeps have prioritized curbing random extraction networks that have proliferated due to regional instability. Ongoing border security efforts have successfully intercepted numerous contraband shipments, heavy electrical machinery, and metal detectors, alongside tens of tons of mineral-rich stone ores. Authorities confirmed that hundreds of domestic and foreign nationals involved in unlawful prospecting have been detained since the initiative began.
Illicit gold panning has surged significantly across the broader border corridor since neighboring Sudan plunged into civil conflict, turning informal mining into a desperate livelihood while simultaneously fueling unauthorized cross-border trafficking. Beyond the immediate threat to life, officials warn that unregulated extraction inflicts severe environmental damage and deprives the state of critical economic resources during a period of tight foreign exchange reserves. In response to these shared transboundary security challenges, Egyptian and Sudanese defense officials have stepped up intelligence sharing and bilateral coordination to seal off trafficking corridors and enforce strict sovereign boundaries. The military has signaled that upcoming phases of the security campaign will persist until illegal mining operations are fully neutralized.
