Amidst the extensive destruction of infrastructure and escalating market prices, the displaced people in the Gaza Strip have found a way to solve their energy problem by turning the debris into wind turbines.
These generators have been set up in the numerous tents that dot the southern part of the territory and are now turning in the coastal winds. They have become an important source of power for families disconnected from the municipal power grid due to years of war that left more than ninety percent of the power generating and distributing facilities destroyed.
This solution was devised by the locals, including former engineering students using basic hand tools and debris. According to local residents, the cost of a single loaf has doubled over the past week, jumping from 250 to 500 Sudanese pounds. Consequently, households are forced to ration their food intake, cutting back consumption to just a single meal a day as traditional staples slip out of financial reach.
This escalating grain crisis compounds an already catastrophic food insecurity landscape driven by prolonged civil warfare, poor seasonal agricultural yields, and diminishing humanitarian assistance. Financial instability has severely eroded the purchasing power of citizens, drastically altering diets nationwide. While basic carbohydrates are becoming an unaffordable luxury, proteins have grown entirely out of reach for average earners; market prices for a single kilogram of meat have surged to between 50,000 and 70,000 pounds, forcing families to scale down purchases drastically to mere fractions of a kilogram.
Humanitarian agencies warn that without immediate economic relief, stabilized supply chains, and renewed foreign aid flows, vulnerable communities will face a worsening descent into widespread famine. As the conflict persists with no clear resolution in sight, the collapse of local food production systems and baking infrastructure signals an even darker phase for civilians bearing the brunt of the ongoing devastation.
