Amidst the extensive destruction of infrastructure and escalating market prices, the displaced people in the Gaza Strip have found a way to solve their energy problem by turning the debris into wind turbines.
These generators have been set up in the numerous tents that dot the southern part of the territory and are now turning in the coastal winds. They have become an important source of power for families disconnected from the municipal power grid due to years of war that left more than ninety percent of the power generating and distributing facilities destroyed.
This solution was devised by the locals, including former engineering students using basic hand tools and debris. Discarded scooter motors serve as the primary power generators, while fragments cut from old water tanks function as spinning aerodynamic blades. Captured energy is then channeled through circuits harvested from destroyed residential properties and stored safely inside backup batteries.
The resulting output supplies enough low-voltage electricity to charge mobile devices, illuminate dark shelters, power household fans, and sustain medical appliances such as pediatric nebulizers required for vulnerable children during the night.
The grassroots push for alternative energy stems from severe financial barriers and trade restrictions that have left commercial power supplies scarce and expensive. While solar panels were once a popular option for families seeking energy independence, years of economic stagnation and restricted border crossings have driven prices up to thousands of dollars per unit, making them completely unattainable for unemployed residents living in temporary camps.
Community members emphasize that while the mechanical output of these wind setups remains modest, the energy generated offers much-needed relief and a sense of normalcy. Local engineers continue to refine their designs using whatever raw materials can be salvaged from nearby rubble, turning fragments of destruction into a sustainable lifeline for displaced households enduring protracted hardship.
