The Coalition to Restore Legitimacy in Yemen announced that its forces had intercepted and destroyed four unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) launched toward Saudi Arabia’s Southern Region.
Coalition spokesperson Major General Turki Al-Malki confirmed the incident in an official statement on Tuesday. He said the drones had been launched by the Houthi militia and were neutralised before reaching their intended destination.
The announcement did not provide further details about the precise interception locations, the timing of the operation or whether the incident caused any damage or casualties.
The reported interception comes amid continued security concerns surrounding drone activity linked to Yemen and threats directed toward Saudi territory. Unmanned aerial vehicles have been used in regional conflicts for surveillance and attack operations, presenting challenges for air defence systems because of their size, flight profiles and potential to approach targets at relatively low altitudes.
Saudi Arabia shares a long border with Yemen, where the Houthi movement has been engaged in conflict with the internationally recognised Yemeni government. The conflict has also involved regional actors and prompted repeated security concerns across the Arabian Peninsula.
The coalition was established in 2015 to support Yemen’s internationally recognised government against the Houthi movement. Saudi Arabia has played a central role in the coalition, which has conducted military operations during the conflict.
In previous incidents, Saudi authorities and coalition representatives have reported intercepting aerial threats directed toward the Kingdom. Such announcements typically identify the number of drones or missiles involved, although the details made public can vary from one incident to another.
The latest statement specifically reported the destruction of four UAVs directed toward the Southern Region. It did not disclose the drones’ launch sites beyond attributing the launch to the Houthi militia, nor did it provide technical information about the aircraft or the defensive systems used to intercept them.
The Southern Region is strategically important because of its proximity to Yemen. Security developments in the area are closely monitored by Saudi authorities due to the potential risks posed by cross-border attacks to communities, infrastructure and essential facilities.
No independent confirmation or additional operational information was included in the announcement provided by the coalition. Further details about the incident were not immediately available.
